ARRL Field Day is an annual amateur radio event held on the fourth full weekend of June, combining a 24-hour operating contest with emergency preparedness exercises and public outreach. Participants set up temporary stations using off-grid power sources to simulate real-world disaster scenarios. The event encourages operators to make as many contacts as possible, showcasing the versatility and resilience of amateur radio communications. In 2024, nearly 1.3 million contacts were reported, with entries from all 85 ARRL sections and 27 countries, reflecting a strong global participation .
For the Boston Amateur Radio Club (BARC), Field Day 2024 marked a significant milestone as it was their third consecutive year hosting the event since the COVID-19 pandemic. Held at Hale Reservation in Westwood, Massachusetts, BARC welcomed the public to observe operations and learn about amateur radio. The event featured a combination of on-air activities and demonstrations, providing an opportunity for both seasoned operators and newcomers to engage with the hobby .ema.arrl.org
This year, the club experienced a fantastic turnout, with participants enjoying excellent weather and a vibrant atmosphere. The event not only served as a platform for practicing emergency communications but also strengthened community bonds and introduced many to the world of amateur radio. Looking ahead, BARC is excited to continue this tradition and further promote the value of amateur radio in public service and emergency preparedness.
